The practical answer

Arriving by train, the Hyde Tavern on Hyde Street is about an 8-minute walk north-east of the station — a local pub from 15:00 at weekends rather than a tourist dining room, dogs welcome; the St James' Tavern on Romsey Road is about 10 minutes via Station Hill, handy if you are heading west of the city towards the hospital, and also welcomes dogs. Neither serves the Cathedral side of town — for that, walk down into the city from the station front. Confirm food times with either pub before travelling.
