The practical answer

Winchester is walkable once you are in. Getting into the district and parking on a busy day is the actual problem. Use parking inventory and Park & Ride here; deep-link National Rail for the 10:23 to Waterloo.

Today's parking options

City-centre and Inner Close parking fills quickly on market days. All-day Park & Ride is £4.50. Regular Park & Ride buses run Monday–Saturday only; there are no buses on Sundays or bank holidays (parking at the sites remains available — East sites St Catherine’s and Barfield are walkable to the Cathedral, roughly 10–15 minutes). On Sundays, free parking is available in park-and-walk car parks.

  • Park-and-walk car parks (e.g. Chesil, Cattle Market, Worthy Lane): Free on Sundays. Always available (pay-and-display). 5–10 minutes to city centre / Cathedral. Best for Sunday visits.
  • East Park & Ride (St Catherine’s or Barfield): All-day £4.50. Parking available; no regular buses (walk ~10–15 min to Cathedral). ~10–15 minutes from East sites. Best for Longer visits; avoids city-centre congestion.
  • City-centre car parks: Higher daytime tariffs (check council for current rates). Available but fill quickly on event / market days. Closest to Cathedral. Best for Only if P&R or park-and-walk is unsuitable.
